Each Way Calculator

Each way calculator: odds, place terms and result in, total return out. Shows place odds, Rule 4 and the price you need for a place to pay.

Your each way bet

An each way bet is two bets, so a 5 each way bet costs 10 in total.

More options
Only if a horse was withdrawn after you bet. 15p in the pound = 15.

Win part: stake × odds. Place part: stake × (1 + (odds − 1) × place terms). Rule 4 comes off the winnings, not the stake.

£5 each way on an 8/1 shot costs £10, not £5. That catches out a lot of people on their first trip to the races. The each way calculator above does the rest: what comes back if it wins, if it only places, and what Rule 4 takes off.

That 8/1 at 1/4 odds: if it places, the place half pays at 2/1 and you get £15 back from your £10. If it wins, both halves pay, £45 plus £15, so £60. If it finishes fourth in a three-place race, you get nothing.

How the each way calculator settles a bet

An each way bet is two equal bets in one:

  • Win part: pays at the full odds if the horse wins.
  • Place part: pays at a fraction of the odds (the place terms) if it finishes in the places, including first.

Enter your stake per part, the odds (8/1, 5/2, 7/4, or decimal), the place terms and the result. The calculator also tells you the place odds and the lowest price where a place alone covers your whole stake.

Place terms in UK racing

Unless the bookie is running an extra-places offer, these are the standard terms:

Race Places paid Terms
2 to 4 runners Win only –
5 to 7 runners 2 1/4
8+ runners (non-handicap) 3 1/5
Handicap, 12 to 15 runners 3 1/4
Handicap, 16+ runners 4 1/4

When each way is worth it

Here’s the number that matters. At 1/4 odds, a horse has to be 4/1 or bigger for a place to win you money overall. At 1/5, it’s 5/1. Back a 3/1 shot each way at 1/4 and a place returns £8.75 from £10. You were right that it’d run well and you still lost money.

So each way is a bet for bigger prices in bigger fields. Big handicaps paying four places at 1/4 are where it’s at its best. On a short favourite, the place half is mostly there to make you feel better.

Rule 4, quickly

If a horse is withdrawn after you bet, the bookie takes a deduction from your winnings, quoted as pence in the pound. A 15p deduction means “15” in the box. It comes off the profit on both halves, never off the stake.

For four picks in one bet, use the Lucky 15 calculator with each way ticked.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a £5 each way bet cost?

£10. It's £5 on the win and £5 on the place.

What does 1/4 odds a place mean?

The place part pays a quarter of the win odds. An 8/1 horse places at 2/1, so £5 returns £15.

If my horse wins, do I get paid for the place as well?

Yes. A winner counts as placed, so both parts pay.

Do non-runners lose an each way bet?

No, both stakes are refunded. Other runners' prices may get a Rule 4 deduction though.
