A Round Robin bet calculator has one tricky job that a Trixie or Patent calculator doesn’t: settling the up and down bets. A Round Robin is ten bets on three selections, three doubles, a treble and three pairs of single stakes about bets. Those last six are where people lose track. £1 a bet costs £10, and the free calculator above settles every part of it.

Round Robin bet calculator: how the ten bets fit together

Part of the bet Bets
3 doubles 3
1 treble 1
3 up and down pairs (single stakes about) 6
Total 10

An up and down bet (also called single stakes about, or SSA) is two conditional singles. Take horses A and B. You have £1 on A, and if A wins, £1 from its return goes on B. And the other way round: £1 on B, and if B wins, £1 goes on A. With three selections there are three pairs, AB, AC and BC, so six bets.

What it pays with one, two or three winners

With the prices loaded above, 2/1, 6/4 and 3/1, and £1 a bet:

  • Only the 2/1 wins: £4 back. No double or treble pays, but the 2/1 starts two up and down bets. Each one returns £3 and passes £1 on to a loser, leaving £2.
  • 2/1 and 6/4 win: £20. The double pays £7.50, the AB pair pays £9 and the other two bets that start on a winner add £3.50.
  • All three win: £91.50.

That two-winner result is the reason people pick a Round Robin over a Trixie. A Trixie with the same two winners returns just the £7.50 double on a £4 stake. The Round Robin costs more, but two from three is a clear profit rather than a small one.

Each way and non-runners

Tick each way and it’s 20 bets, £20 at £1 each way. The place half runs its own doubles, treble and up and down bets on the place odds.

A non-runner is void. In the doubles and treble it’s odds of 1.0. In an up and down pair it acts like a winner at evens, so your stake simply moves on to the other horse. If the 3/1 had been a non-runner with the other two winning, the slip above would return £40.50.

With a fourth selection the same idea becomes a Flag. If you don’t want the up and down bets, try the Trixie calculator, or open the full bet calculator for every other bet type.

Ten bets on three picks still means one slip at ten times the stake. BeGambleAware.org is free and confidential if it stops being fun.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Round Robin bet?

Ten bets on three selections: three doubles, one treble and three up and down (single stakes about) pairs, which make six bets.

How much does a £1 Round Robin cost?

£10, or £20 each way.

What is an up and down bet?

Two conditional singles on two selections. If the first wins, one stake from its return goes on the second, and the same happens in reverse.

Does a Round Robin pay with one winner?

Yes, through the up and down bets. A single winner at 2/1 returns £4 on a £1 Round Robin.
