A Canadian bet calculator earns its place the first time you try to settle 26 bets by hand. A Canadian, also called a Super Yankee, takes five selections and covers every double, treble, four-fold and five-fold between them. No singles. £1 a bet costs £26, and the free calculator above shows what comes back for any mix of winners.

The name has nothing to do with Canada as far as anyone can tell. It’s simply the next step up from a Yankee.

Canadian bet calculator: what’s in the bet

Part of the bet Bets
10 doubles 10
10 trebles 10
5 four-folds 5
1 five-fold 1
Total 26

Each way doubles it to 52 bets, so £1 each way is £52.

What it pays with 2, 3 or 4 winners

Take the prices loaded above: 2/1, 5/2, 3/1, 7/4 and 4/1, £1 a bet. What you get back depends on how many win:

  • Two winners (2/1 and 5/2): one double pays, £10.50. You’re £15.50 down.
  • Three winners: three doubles and a treble pay, £78.50. That’s £52.50 profit.
  • Four winners: 11 bets pay, £323.25.
  • All five: £2,005.75.

Notice the gap between two and three. With no singles in the bet, two winners only ever land one double, and on short prices that won’t cover £26. A Canadian is really a bet that three or more of your five come in. If you’d like singles as a safety net, switch the bet type to Lucky 31.

Non-runners and each way

Mark a non-runner as void. Every bet that includes it is settled as if that leg were 1.0, so the five-fold becomes a four-fold, and the doubles it was in turn into singles on the other horse. You lose nothing on the non-runner itself, but the bet is a little smaller.

Each way works the same way as in any multiple: a full set of win bets and a full set of place bets, the place bets paying on any combination of winners and placed horses. With two winners and two placed at 1/5 odds, the £52 each way version above returns about £40.31. Rule 4 and dead heats are under the extra options.

One fewer selection is a Yankee, one more is a Heinz. Every bet type is in the main bet calculator.

26 bets on one slip adds up fast. Check the total stake before you place it. BeGambleAware.org is free and confidential if it stops being fun.
