A Heinz bet calculator is what you want when one slip holds 57 bets on six selections. It saves you working through 15 doubles, 20 trebles and everything above by hand. The name comes from the 57 varieties on the ketchup bottle, and at £1 a bet it costs £57. The calculator above is free and settles the lot as you mark each result.

Heinz bet calculator: the 57 bets

Part of the bet Bets
15 doubles 15
20 trebles 20
15 four-folds 15
6 five-folds 6
1 six-fold 1
Total 57

There are no singles. Each way doubles everything, so £1 each way is £114.

Returns for 2, 3 and 4 winners

With the six prices loaded above (6/4, 3/1, 2/1, 9/2, 5/2 and 4/1) at £1 a bet:

  • Two winners (6/4 and 3/1): one double, £10. You’re £47 down.
  • Three winners: three doubles and a treble, £59.50. Just about your money back, £2.50 up.
  • Four winners: 11 bets pay, £439.
  • All six: £12,260.50.

That’s the honest shape of a Heinz. It’s built for three or more winners, and it’s three or four winners where the money really starts. With two winners you’re relying on two big prices to dig you out.

A quirk worth knowing: with only two winners, a Heinz, a Canadian and a Yankee all pay exactly the same, because the only bet that lands is the one double between those two. The bigger bets just cost more.

Each way Heinz

Ticking each way adds 57 place bets, which pay at the place odds on any combination of winners and placed horses. It’s the part that keeps a Heinz alive on a tough day. With the first two winning and the next two placing at 1/5 odds, the £114 each way version above returns about £44.42. Not a profit, but a long way from nothing.

Non-runners are settled at 1.0, so mark them void and the calculator shrinks every bet they were in. Rule 4 and dead heats are in the extra options for each selection.

If six feels like a lot, a Canadian covers five picks in 26 bets. For seven, there’s the Super Heinz. With singles added, the same six picks make a Lucky 63, which you’ll find in the main bet calculator.

£1 a line is £57 a slip. Decide on the total first, then the stake per bet. BeGambleAware.org is free and confidential if it stops being fun.
