There are 45,057,474 different ways to choose six numbers from 59, so that’s the chance of one line matching all six main numbers. Lotto also draws a bonus ball, which only matters for the five-plus-bonus prize. Smaller prizes start at two main numbers.
To put 45 million in perspective: buying a different line every second, day and night, it would take about 17 months to cover every combination. Nobody plays Lotto because the maths is good.
Why a random line can still be the smart one
Since 59 balls came in, a lot of players still pick numbers from 1 to 31 because they’re birthdays and anniversaries. That doesn’t change their odds, but it means when low numbers come up, there are more winners to share with. A line that includes 40s and 50s is just as likely to win and less likely to be split.
Tick “Avoid lines that look like birthdays” under Your own rules and the generator skips lines where every number is 31 or under. Playing a syndicate? Ask for ten lines with no more than two numbers in common between any two of them, so the group’s lines cover the board.
