An India lottery tax calculator shows how much of a prize reaches your bank account. Win ₹75 lakh in a Kerala state lottery and 10% (₹7.5 lakh) goes to the agent first. The remaining ₹67.5 lakh is taxed at 30%, with a 10% surcharge on that tax because it’s over ₹50 lakh, plus 4% cess. You receive about ₹44.3 lakh, a little under 60% of the headline prize. The free calculator above does the sum for any prize, Kerala or not.
How the India lottery tax calculator works
Lottery winnings are taxed as a flat 30%, with no basic exemption and no deductions against them. On top of that:
- Surcharge on the tax: 10% if the taxable prize is over ₹50 lakh, 15% over ₹1 crore and 25% over ₹2 crore.
- Health and education cess of 4% on tax plus surcharge.
- Kerala agent commission: the selling agent’s 10% share comes off the prize before tax.
Taxable = prize × 0.9 (Kerala) or prize Tax = 30% × taxable Net = taxable − tax − surcharge − 4% cess
Tax is deducted at source on prizes over ₹10,000, so what you’re paid is usually already net. Prizes at or below that are paid in full, though they still count as income.
Numbers to keep in mind
The effective deduction on a Kerala prize is about 38.1% on smaller prizes (10% commission plus 31.2% of the rest), rising past 40% once surcharge applies. A ₹1 crore Kerala first prize, for example, becomes ₹90 lakh after commission, and about ₹59.11 lakh after tax, surcharge and cess. Just above each surcharge threshold, marginal relief can trim the surcharge slightly, which the calculator doesn’t apply, so treat results right at ₹50 lakh, ₹1 crore and ₹2 crore as a slight overestimate of the tax.
These are general figures, not tax advice. For a large prize, check the deduction on your claim and speak to a tax professional.
For the odds of each prize, the lottery odds calculator works for any pick-style draw.
