Poker dice is poker with five dice instead of cards. Each die shows 9, 10, J, Q, K and A, and you’re after the best poker hand in up to three rolls. Play it above: roll, tap the dice you want to keep, and roll the rest again. It’s free, and the table shows the odds of every hand on a single throw.

Poker dice rules

  1. Roll all five dice.
  2. Keep any dice you like and roll the others. You can do this twice, so three rolls in all. You can stop early.
  3. Your hand is what’s showing after your last roll. Highest hand wins the round.

In a group, the first player sets the number of rolls: if they stop after two, everyone else gets two at most. Ties are broken by the rank of the dice that make the hand (aces high), then the remaining dice.

Five dice with six faces give 6⁵ = 7,776 equally likely throws. One surprise: a straight is rarer than a full house here, the opposite of card poker, yet most rules still rank the full house higher. Some groups swap them. Agree before you start.

Poker dice strategy

  • Keep pairs and better. With one pair, roll the other three. With two pair, most players roll the odd die for a 1 in 3 shot at a full house.
  • Chase straights only with four in a row. 10-J-Q-K plus a pair? Rolling the spare die gives a 1 in 3 chance: either a 9 or an ace completes it.
  • Don’t break a full house to go for five of a kind. It’s 1 in 36 to roll two matching dice.

Liar’s dice uses the same dice in some pubs, with players bluffing about hidden rolls, but that’s a different game. For ordinary dice odds, see the dice probability calculator. For the card version, the poker hand rankings.
