A survivor pool calculator helps with the decision that wins or loses most pools: take the safest team, or go against the crowd. Say 200 entries are left in a $10,000 pool. Team A is an 80% favourite and 40% of the pool is on them. Team B is a 72% favourite with only 8% picking them. The calculator works out what each pick is worth to you after this week, counting both the risk of losing and how many people you’ll share the pot with if you win. On those numbers Team A just edges it: $48.69 against $47.12. Drop Team A’s share to 60% of the pool and B comes out ahead.
How the survivor pool calculator works
If your team wins, you survive along with everyone else whose team won. The fewer people left, the bigger your share of the pot. So the value of a pick is:
Equity = chance your team wins × pot ÷ expected entries left
Expected entries left counts the people on your team (they all survive with you) plus every other group times its own chance to win. A popular favourite that loses wipes out a big chunk of the field, which is exactly why fading it can pay.
Getting good inputs
Win chances should come from the betting market with the vig removed. The no-vig calculator turns a moneyline into a fair percentage. Pick percentages are published by most big pool sites by Saturday. For “everyone else”, use the average win chance of the remaining picks; 65% to 70% is typical in a normal week.
The calculator only looks one week ahead. It doesn’t account for saving a strong team for a later week when you’ll need it more, so use it to choose between picks you’re already comfortable with, not to burn your best team in week two.
